The Scope 3 Burden and How Automation Actually Helps

February 05, 2026·Sinan Can Soysal

Talk to any sustainability team about Scope 3 and you'll hear some version of the same sigh. It's the elephant in the room: 70 to 90 percent of total emissions for most companies and easily the least standardized, hardest-to-measure part of the whole exercise.

Why It's So Hard

The data lives elsewhere. With Scope 1 and 2, a company controls the data collection because it controls the source. Scope 3 flips that entirely: you're now dependent on hundreds, sometimes thousands, of suppliers, most of whom don't have primary emissions data sitting ready to hand over.

Fifteen categories, both directions. Upstream and downstream activities span everything from raw material extraction to how a product gets disposed of at the end of its life. A single company might genuinely need to track all of it simultaneously: logistics, product use, end-of-life, and more.

You need data you can't demand. Companies rarely have real leverage over supplier behavior, but they still need supplier data to hit their own compliance obligations. That mismatch (needing something you can't actually require) creates a lot of friction in supplier relationships.

Where Automation Actually Helps

  • Invoice-based calculation. Structured invoices can be parsed automatically to calculate emissions tied to purchased goods (Category 1) and transportation (Category 4), without anyone manually keying in line items.
  • Automated supplier outreach. Templated data requests with progress tracking replace the ad-hoc email chains that used to eat up weeks of a sustainability team's time.
  • Data quality scoring. Clear visibility into which figures rest on real supplier data versus estimated factors, which is useful both internally and for anyone auditing the report later.
  • A built-in audit trail. Every number traces back to the source data and the methodology used to calculate it, which matters enormously once assurance requirements kick in.

None of this makes Scope 3 easy, exactly, since it's an inherently messy problem. But automation turns it from a manual slog that doesn't scale into something a small team can actually manage. That's the gap we designed BUME to close, so your team can spend its time on reduction rather than data wrangling.
